Milwaukee Metroplitan Sewage District

Ruekert & Mielke, Inc. (R/M) was chosen to provide a condition assessment and long-term solution options in order to extend the life of the culverts underneath State Fair Park. The R/M team looked beyond the pipe’s internal conditions and investigated the surrounding environment to determine contributing factors to the culvert failure and future rehabilitation needs.

The R/M approach was classified as a forensic investigation, looking into the interior of the culverts to assess potential long-term issues to be addressed. The comprehensive survey of the interior of the pipe will allow the District to catalogue areas for future investigation and focus rehabilitation efforts on areas with greatest impact. The approach included record reviews, soil borings, internal inspection, core samples, and offering repair methodologies.

The survey serves as the basis for future investigations to determine if any deformations are increasing and to catch potential failures before they occur. The final solution for the entire culvert length included a ten-year approach to the repair or rehabilitation of he entire culvert system.
