City of Pewaukee, WI

Adjacent to Pewaukee Lake, the Oak Street and Peninsula Road area had a combination of poor water quality, poor soils, and a long, densely-populated road that needed to be reconstructed. With narrow right-of-ways, this made the installation of utilities and road reconstruction a significant challenge. The soft underlying soils required full-width excavation of the roads and presented a potential restriction on emergency services during construction.

Due to the design of utilities in a limited area, close coordination was needed with the WDNR to gain project approval due to the limited space in the narrow right-of-ways. Maintaining access during construction was essential for residents in the area along with maintaining EMS services during construction. The City of Pewaukee had partnered with R/M on similar high-profile, difficult projects due to our knowledge of local conditions and our effective communication methods during construction.

R/M provided a design and construction staging plan that allowed access to most properties throughout the project. During these phases, property owners were offered to subscribe to a daily email service that highlighted where the construction crews would be, the best access route, and at what time of day the route would be available. Local school bus companies, refuse companies, and EMS services were also included in the daily emails. The result of this daily email service was minimal complaints from property owners. The unseen benefit to the property owners was the extensive undercuts of soft soils and a roadway with an anticipated life of 30 years with normal maintenance before any significant repairs need to be made.
