Securing funds for infrastructure projects can be a challenge for municipalities. The good news? There's a wealth of grant programs available to support a wide range of projects. Whether you're looking to upgrade storm drains, install solar panels, or restore your local stream, there's likely a grant program out there that aligns with your goals.

Follow these steps to find the best grant to fit your project!

  1. Identify Your Needs

Start by identifying your specific project needs and timelines. This includes understanding what infrastructure improvements are most pressing and when you aim to complete them.

  2. Match Grants to Goals

Once you have a clear picture of your project it’s time to match it with the best grant. You can work with R/M’s grant experts or scour relevant databases like Grants.gov, state agency websites (DNR, DOT, EPA, USDA), and industry resources to find potential grant programs that match your goals and timeframe.

  3. Give AI a Try

You can even use AI tools such as ChatGPT to search for grants by entering the project criteria, timeframe, and location.

  4. Understand Eligibility

Not all grants are created equal. It’s important to analyze each program's eligibility requirements, ensuring your project and organization meet the criteria before you invest time in an application. Key information you’ll want to consider includes:

    • Who are eligible applicants

    • What project components are eligible

    • Is a pre-application required

    • Application deadline

    • Project and grant timing

  5. Consider the “Cost” of the Grant

Don’t forget to consider the time and financial commitment to apply for and administer grants. Application and administrative time can vary greatly across different grants and agencies. Your community needs to weigh these costs with potential funding total. You also need to consider the probability of winning the grant you are applying for, some are much more competitive than others.

  6. MaximizE Funding & Cash Flow

Many grants require a funding match, typically 50/50. Sometimes you can leverage state grants to fulfill the match requirement for federal grants, maximizing your potential funding. You also need to be aware of cash flow implications for grants where reimbursement occurs after 100% completion.

  7. Win the Grant!
